Last Tuesday, we at Asyl Spenge e.V. had the pleasure of hosting a very special evening: Islamic scholar and journalist Lutz Jäkel captivated over 180 guests with a powerful live report on pre-war Syria. Through stunning images and moving stories, he took us on a journey through the streets of Damascus and Aleppo, showcasing a Syria rich in cultural diversity and hospitality – far removed from the images of war we often see in the news.
Originally planned for 150 guests, the event exceeded all expectations with over 180 attendees. We are especially proud of our event organizer Samir Alnajjar, who, together with Anne Beckmann and Karl Hankel, made this event a reality. Samir, who came to Germany from Syria ten years ago and now works as a social worker for the city of Enger, is an active member of the board at Asyl Spenge e.V.. His deep connection to his homeland played a significant role in the success of this evening, offering young refugees a chance to see Syria in its original beauty.
A special thank you to the team of Syrian volunteers who prepared and served delicious traditional Syrian dishes to our guests. From welcoming attendees in the parking lot to guiding them into the hall, they left a lasting impression with their warmth, dedication, and traditional outfits. “It seems everyone really enjoyed the food: applause!” said Lutz Jäkel.
Adding to the atmosphere was the beautiful live music by Syrian musician Hosam Alibrahim, which made the evening even more memorable.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the city of Spenge, VHS Herford, International Verein Bünde, Arbeit und Leben, and the Meilenstein team for their tremendous support. Thanks to their contribution, this wonderful evening was made possible. And, of course, a big thank you to the Asyl Spenge team – this success would not have been possible without your hard work and dedication.
This event not only highlighted Syria’s struggles in recent years but also celebrated its rich culture and history, which we must strive to preserve and honor.
Asyl Spenge e.V. has been working for years to support the integration of refugees and foster cultural exchange. Through events like this, we aim to build bridges between cultures and promote mutual understanding.
